比較級の次の時間、最上級で出る誤りは3つにまとまります。the の抜け（Summer is most popular season.）、in と of の取りちがえ（the tallest in the four／the fastest of Japan）、more の時間に覚えた形との重ね（the most biggest）。どれも「いちばんは1つに決まる」「何の中でいちばんか」が見えていない誤りです。この授業案は、4つの札から1つにしぼるクイズで最上級を15文聞かせてから、the と in・of の役目を生徒の言葉で出させます。最後の1問は答えを言わずに止め、展開のクラス調べで確かめます。

授業の流れ（50分）
導入: 4つの札でいちばん（15分）
黒板（投影版なら画面のいちばん下）に4つの候補を札で並べ、ヒントを1文ずつ聞かせて1つにしぼります。
- It's not the biggest of the four.
- It's not the fastest of the four.
- It's the tallest of the four.
候補は an elephant ／ a cheetah ／ a horse ／ a giraffe。1文目で象、2文目でチーター、3文目で馬が消えて、キリンが残ります。以降は日本の都道府県（the smallest prefecture in Japan＝香川県・東京は3番目に小さい）・太陽系の惑星（the hottest planet in our solar system＝金星）・学校の場所（the quietest place in our school）・先生の教科（I like it the best of the four.）と進みます。15文のうち most が付くのは2文、best は2文です。
6問目は「クラスでいちばん人気の季節」で、答えを言いません。札を1つ選ばせて I think summer is the most popular season in our class. と予想を書かせ、展開に持ち越します。
正解のたびに Which animal do you like the best? のように1つ聞き、I like dogs the best. で答えさせます。板書は2列＝左に聞こえたヒント、右に生徒の答えです。I like dogs best. や I like dogs the most. は自然な英語なので直しません。
気づき: the と in・of はなぜ要る？（8分）
左の列から2文を並べます（It's the tallest of the four. ／ It's the smallest prefecture in Japan.）。「the が付くのはなぜ？」——いちばんは1つに決まるから、が出るまで待ちます。次に of と in に印をつけ、後ろに来ている語を比べさせます。of の後ろは the four・all（数や仲間）、in の後ろは Japan・our solar system・our school（場所や集まり）。
最後に the most difficult と the biggest を並べ、前の時間の more difficult／bigger を横に書いて「most が付くのはどっち？」。長い語は most、短い語は -est、good は best。the most biggest を板書し、「いちばんの印が2つある。どちらを消す？」と聞いて most を消させます。
展開: クラスいちばん調べ（17分）
4人の班で、下の6つから調べるものを1つ選びます。まず班で予想を1文書き（We think summer is the most popular season in our class.）、1人6人に聞いて、班で数を合わせます。

聞く側は Me, too! ／ Really? と反応し、もう1つだけ聞きます（Why?）。季節の班は6問目の予想の答え合わせになるので、必ず1班は季節にします。給食の無い学校は「給食」を the food you like the best に替えてください。
机間で誤りが聞こえても、活動は止めません。Summer is most popular. には Oh, summer is the most popular! と、the の入った形を話の続きとして返すだけにします（リキャスト）。多い誤りはメモしておき、出口の前に全体で1回だけ取り上げます。
出口: 調べた結果の報告3文（6分）
班で調べた結果を、1人3文で書きます（In our class, summer is the most popular season. Seven students like it the best. I like winter the best because I like skiing.）。2班に読み上げてもらい、6問目の予想と比べます。机間で見るのは3つです——the の抜け（most popular season）、in と of（of our class）、印の重ね（the most biggest）。
まとめ（4分）
次の時間は「同じくらい」の as ～ as。班の結果から Winter is as popular as spring. が言えるか、と予告して終わります。
